RTE star Ryan Tubridy had tears in his eyes as Kellie Harrington got Olympic gold medal

Ryan Tubridy has revealed he had tears in his eyes as he watched Kellie Harrington receive her Olympic gold medal on Sunday.

The Dublin boxer made history by becoming the third Irish person in history to win gold in boxing by beating Brazilian Beatriz Ferreira in the lightweight final.

Tubridy, like the majority of people, was very emotional watching the action from Tokyo and he revealed Harrington is one of his favourite people.

He said on RTE Radio 1: "Kellie Harrington is one of my favourite people in this country medal or no medal. I always loved seeing her coming through the door whether it was on the radio or indeed on the TV show.

"She's one of those people that you all now know if you hadn't already known is a very, very special person.

"She's thoughtful, she's reflective, she's patriotic, she's not a drama queen, she's simply great.

"I did have tears in my eyes watching her at the medal ceremony because it was just so emotional for her, for her family, who are gorgeous people and for her community, who are amazing.

"She's the best of Irish, she's the best of us, and you could just look at her and the way she just wanted to share every bit of it.

"Even from a sporting point of view how she was hugging the other competitors and bringing them all in and leading them in the most joyful way.

"Then the scenes yesterday outside her house, as everyone now seems to be familiar with, with her family and friends and the community there. It was lovely."
