RTE star Ryan Tubridy explains why he won't miss 'boring' New Year's Eve

RTE star Ryan Tubridy has admitted that he won't miss celebrations on New Year's Eve if hospitality is shut in Ireland.

He was speaking as restrictions on household visits and on the hospitality sector could be introduced in Ireland before the end of the month.

The Dubliner said: “I’ve always felt that New Year’s Eve was the most boring, disappointing  anti-climax of them all.

“I’m not going to miss that.

“From chatting to the guys upstairs, nobody is upset that New Year’s is gone.

“Maybe some people are, I think a lot of people won’t have a problem with that.

“It feels like we’re heading to a slightly abridged version of Christmas.

“The catch word seems to be tread carefully as much as we can.

“We’re not perfect.”

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has recommended that stricter restrictions be introduced before the end of the year as case numbers continue to rise.

Ryan said on his Radio One programme this morning: “I suspect the Christmas run got shorter, it’s coming down the track.

"We’re gonna get Christmas.

"We’ll get to Stephen’s Day and then it’s time to step away from the mulled wine.

“I’m ready for a bit of that, not everyone would be.

“It’s going to hard for people who need to cross county boundaries to see their loved ones.

“That’s going to be a tough one if that start shutting that one down.

“There’ll be a lot of movement in the next five days to fit everything in."

It comes as the Northern Ireland Executive announced a six-week lockdown would come into effect on December 26 amid rising cases of the virus.

In the Republic, a further 484 cases of Covid-19 and three more deaths linked to the virus were reported on Thursday.

200 patients with coronavirus were in hospital, including 31 in ICU.
