Marty Morrissey has paid tribute to his mother as he returns to work after her death.

In a New Year’s message posted on Twitter the RTE star said: “Happy New Year to you and your loved ones tonight as we approach 2022.

“I’m back at work tomorrow morning on RTE Radio 1 from 9 to 11am.”

Remembering his beloved mother Peggy, who tragically died in a car crash in December, he added: “My mother loved the radio so it’s a good place for me to start. Do join us if you can.”

Fans replied with their condolences with many saying they were looking forward to hearing him back on the radio.

One said: “Sorry for your sad loss Marty. My mam passed away the day before your mam. A hard, sad time. Thinking of you x”

Marty replied: “My deepest sympathies. I understand your pain and wish you all the love in the world at this very sad time.”

The RTE presenter‘s mother Peggy Twomey died in a car crash at the start of December.

The 91-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after the car she was driving hit a wall at around 12:30am on Tuesday, December 7 just outside of Annagh near Miltown Malbay in Co Clare.

It is understood Mrs Twomey was driving to a hotel in Spanish Point where she wanted to stay in a bid to be safe from Storm Barra at the time of the tragic crash.

At her funeral on December 12, Peggy was remembered as a “5’4” force of nature” and a “fiercely independent woman.”

Marty, her only child, told mourners: “We were a great team, the most formidable mother and son team in the world.

“I’ve got to let you go now mam, go to dad and tell him I love him too.

“You lived life to the full, there is no doubt Peggy Morrissey you did it your way.”
