RTE star Kevin McGahern admits he has dabbled in psychedelic drugs

RTE star Kevin McGahern has admitted he has dabbled in psychedelic drugs.

In 2014, the comedian and actor wrote and directed The Devil’s Ceili with Philip Doherty, winning multiple awards.

It featured the drug experiences of three social climbers in a small Cavan town who are slipped LSD by the devil.

Kevin told the Irish Mirror: “The play was set in 1962, I believe in more natural means like magic mushrooms.

“I think support local Irish produce, go to a golf course in September and look out for lads who clearly don’t look like golfers looking for lost balls.

“They’re the lads you talk to, I’ve had mushrooms of course, it’s part of growing up in Cavan.

“But if you are trying them you need to be with good people, a small number of people in a comfortable setting with good music and lots of art on the walls.”

The 33-year-old welcomed the idea of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar legalising cannabis for medicinal purposes.

He said: “I think cannabis has amazing medicinal products, my buddy had cancer and it was a huge help to him going through chemotheray.

“He’s got over it now thank God but he smoked a joint with his mum at the time, I think she was like, ‘Why doesn’t everyone do this?”

The former Republic Of Telly star explained how clamping down on cannabis use is a futile exercise.

He said: “I’ve spoken to several Gardai who feel like they’re wasting their time stopping people smoking it when there are real violent crimes out there that need to be solved.”

These days the funnyman revealed he sticks to the black stuff, adding: “Personally I prefer a few pints of Lady Guinness, my one true love and I will never turn against her.

“I’ve always been a firm believer in altered consciousness.

“I think life would be far too boring without the drink.”

  • Kevin will be at the Vodafone Comedy Festival from July 25 to 28 in Iveagh Gardens, Dublin.

He joins more than 130 Irish and international acts including Tommy Tiernan, Des Bishop, Jason Byrne, Dylan Moran, Deirdre O’Kane, Neil Delaware and Alison Spittle.
