RTE star Joe Duffy asked if he is 'a big fat s***e' by Liveline caller in mad row over Famine museum involving Eamonn Holmes and Tina Turner

RTE star Joe Duffy was asked if he is a "big fat s***e" by an angry Liveline caller after a discussion involving the Great Famine, Eamonn Holmes and Tina Turner took a bizarre turn.

The show kicked off on Thursday with Joe at the helm, having returned from a holiday at the start of the week.

And he was welcomed back in a classic Liveline way - with a bit of an argument.

The Doagh Famine Museum in Donegal had faced criticism from academics in recent weeks, but the curator and owner of the exhibit, Pat Doherty, was on the show today to defend it.

One caller, Patricia Holmes, chimed in to praise it - or so Joe thought.

"Do you know what Joe, I'm sitting here crying. I didn't know the information about what we're talking about now. It's really upsetting.

"I've been up to yer man's place and I thought there was going to be someone giving out about political s***e! There was none of that going on when I was there."

After a bit of banter during which Joe asked her about Belfast on July 12 and a bit more history around the museum, Patricia made her move.

"Joe, can I ask you a favour? Tell Ronan Collins don't be playing 'Simply the Best' by Tina Turner. Right?

"And another thing, I was in Galway, and I heard the Chieftains. Tell Ronan not to play that again. That's only two songs. You do your research Joe, you know why I don't want to hear that song. It's not on."

At this point, Joe interjected, asking Patricia whether she was related to popular broadcaster Eamonn Holmes, whom Joe interviewed a fortnight ago.

"I'm saying nothing Joe. What did you like about him? Did he give you a dinner?" to which Joe replied in the negative, leaving Patricia to deliver the killer blow.

"Are you a big fat sh**e Joe?"

To be fair to Joe, he took it in his stride, saying that he "was indeed a big fat sh**e" and that "it's less dinners that I need, not more of them".

Listeners were in stitches, with one tweeting that "it was like Fr Ted on steroids".

"The heat is really getting to Liveline," said another person.

Another posted: "Liveline has heatstroke!"

Others praised Duffy for his handling of the situation.

"Well that's all gone completely arseways for @joeliveline but in the loveliest of ways that makes Irish radio unique #liveline," said one user.

But we'll leave the last line to one of the museum's regulars, who said: "So I hear there’s whole lot of people who want to come visit our unique, zany, interesting wee Doagh Famine Village now. Nice one Joe."
