RTE spent a staggering €2.4 million on new Fair City set

The State broadcaster spent a whopping €2.4 million on the new set of RTE One soap Fair City after it had to be moved when land at the D4 campus was sold.

Responding to a Freedom of Information request, Montrose bosses revealed this week that a total of €2.381,235 was spent on the Carrigstown revamp.

However, station bosses said that the makeover bill was covered entirely by the proceeds of the land sale when Cairn Homes snapped up nine acres for €107.5 million.

The redesign included a new-look McCoys pub, and fancy makeovers for The Hungry Pig cafe and The Station bar.

A spokesman for RTE said last night: “The decision to move the programme set was taken as a result of the sale of land at the Donnybrook campus.

“The money to pay for this capital project came entirely from funds generated by this land sale.

"The costs included planning, design, construction, set dressing and professional fees."

Last year bosses at cash-strapped RTE defended spending taxpayers' money on a new set, saying that the public was entitled to entertainment.
