RTE's Ryan Tubridy will return to the airwaves on Monday after 'trip of a lifetime'

RTE has confirmed that Ryan Tubridy will return to his 9 O'Clock slot on RTE Radio One on Monday after taking a much-needed summer break.

The radio host has been away for the past two weeks travelling the west of the country following the finale of the latest season of The Late Late Show.

Oliver Callan, who stepped in for Tubridy while he was away, announced on Twitter today that Friday, June 11, would be his last day presenting the popular morning show.

He said: “Happy #FridayFeeling It's my last day subbing on @RyanTubridyShow. So it could be a bold one!”

While on his break away, Tubridy revealed that he took the time to climb Carrauntoohil in Co. Kerry, describing the experience as 'unique'.

Mr Tubridy posted pictures from his hike up Irelands tallest mountain saying, “I promised I’d climb it last week. So I thought about it, and thanks to my new friends, Madi and her dad, Maurice, we made it!

“A beautiful, intense, unique experience. If I can do it.”

He added: "It was a cold, wet and misty climb up Carrauntoohil but thanks to the loveliest people I could have met, Madi and her Dad, Maurice (and fruit and chocolate), we got there.

“Trip of a lifetime. Once should do the trick!”

Tubridy spoke about the possibility of embarking on the expedition on his show a few weeks ago with Madeline Walsh, an experienced hiker from Mountain Adventure Walks.

Ms Walsh explained to Tubridy how he should prepare and what to expect on his journey.

The experienced hiker followed through on her advice and ended up climbing the peak with Tubridy and her dad Maurice.

Tubridy stayed true to his word as he told listeners before heading off on his two-week break, "I'm definitely going to do it (climb Carrauntoohil), I just need to find the right circumstances and the right person.

"I think I'd like to do that, I think it would be really gorgeous.

"I have a good pair of hiking boots.”
