RTÉ's Ryan Tubridy tempted to get a pet of his own after meeting Doireann Garrihy’s ‘beautiful’ dog

RTÉ star Ryan Tubridy tempted to get a pet of his own after meeting Doireann Garrihy’s ‘beautiful’ dog.

Tubridy bumped into 2fm DJ Garrihy and her boyfriend Paddy Wilson on a walk with their new puppy Bertie and fell in love with the dog.

On his RTE Radio 1 this morning he said: "I met Doireann Garrihy, who you'll know from 2fm, and her other half one day as we were going for a walk and they were driving past and they showed me their little dog."

He admitted he thought the puppy was "beautiful".

He said: "It's a Cavapoo, get it. It's a King Charles Cavalier meets a poodle.

"And I said, 'That's a beautiful dog'. And I haven't had a dog for about a thousand years but I said, 'That is a pretty dog'.

"Really really gorgeous like something out of a Jim Henson movie, like a little muppet dog.

"So I went home and said to the girls, 'I saw Doireann's dog' and they said, 'Can we see a picture?'"

He then contacted Garrihy to get a picture of the dog to show the girls, and they were quick to ask him about getting one themselves.

He said: "They fell head over heels for the dog. Now this isn't going anywhere you think where there's going to be a dog in the corner but I'm just saying it was gorgeous and the dog was lovely and then the campaign started at home.

"'Would you not consider it? The environment is right, we'd all go for walks and share the burden' and so on and so forth."

Although Tubridy was not yet convinced, he admitted he always had dogs around him growing up and his listeners seemed to think him getting one was a great idea.

One wrote in saying: ""Get a dog. They're nicer than humans."

Another added: '" heard it in your voice, the seed has been sown. I'd wager you'll have one by the end of the summer."

The presenter still didn't seem convinced.

He said: "It took me maybe - how many years is it since I had a dog? 30 years? - it took me kind of 30 years to come to the cusp of thinking about it.

"Think about how far removed that is from reality, I'm at the cusp of thinking about a dog. And a cat is another three cusps away.

"I'll see, I'll see. I don't even know where to begin."
