RTE's Ryan Tubridy tells of 'embarrassing' moment in SuperValu

RTE's Ryan Tubridy has revealed his embarrassment when he forgot his credit card to pay for his shopping at Supervalu.

The 48-year-old Dubliner had a full trolley and was at the till when it occurred to him that he couldn't pay.

He told listeners to his RTE Radio One show on Wednesday morning: "I was standing with a lovely sized trolley, everything was done and I realised I didn't have my card.

"It's OK because I have my phone, which has Revolut, but I didn't have enough funds in it.

"To add funds you need card details, which I didn't have and couldn't remember.

"The guy behind me was thinking 'this guy is a basket case'.

"You're watching all the ones you thought you'd successfully overtaken in the queue whizzing by.

"I wanted to apologise to the man behind me in the queue."

Tubridy was grateful that staff were so understanding of him causing a delay for others in the store.

He added: "Then I had to try to find another card on the phone, there is a significant amount of sweat being broken at this stage, I'm not going to lie.

"I'm mortified, I'm embarrassed.

"Thank goodness, SuperValu are my friends.

"The store near me has essentially been my youth club since the pandemic.

"The guy at the counter was so patient and the man behind me whose day I wrecked was manners personified.

"I was mortified for myself and broadly my family.

"I got home and made a cup of tea and ate chocolate."

It comes as Tubridy told how he gifted his sister a picture of himself as a Christmas present – and didn’t tell her it was a joke.

The Late Late Show host said he received a framed photograph of himself one year for Christmas.

And although he said the gift was “well intended”, he rewrapped it and gifted it to his sister as a presenter instead.

Speaking during a Q&A on Instagram, Ryan revealed: “The worst Christmas present? It was well intended, it was from an organisation, they gave me a framed photo of myself.

"I gave it to my sister. I didn’t tell her it was a joke,” he said laughing.

The RTE Radio One host also said you could “torture” him, but he will never reveal the Late Late Toy Show theme.

The theme every year is so closely guarded that only a few people know about it.

He said: “I’m never going to tell you. You can ask and ask. You can torture me in this chair. You can bring me to the worst prisons.”

And the father-of-two is also hoping to write another children’s book, saying he has “two ideas in his head” but he needs to “get them over the line”.

With five titles already under his belt, he teased another one is on its way.

“Yes, it’s going to happen. I don’t know but I’m nearly finished with my homework,” he added.
