RTE's Ryan Tubridy shares nerves and clever trick ahead of 'monster' dental operation

RTE's Ryan Tubridy has said that he's considering putting in headphones while he's getting a 'monster' dental operation done on Friday.

The Dubliner told listeners to his radio show on that he has no phobia of dentists but was worried when he was told of all the painkillers he'd have to take afterwards.

Ryan agreed with a listener who said they were a wreck ahead of a visit to the dentist saying: "You and me both."

Tubridy doesn't want to be sedated for the procedure which he has 'not been looking forward to for a while.'

He said: "I have a monster of a dental appointment that I've been thinking about only for about six weeks.

"I'm looking forward to it like a hole in my head.

"I am not that afraid of the dentist but I just think that today's operation is going to be quite big.

"Anyway, now I feel like a backtracking button.

"I think I'll put in headphones [while getting the operation].

"I have a very good dentist but he made me worried when he spoke about all the painkillers that I'll have to take after the procedure.

"I only mentioned the dentist thing in passing but it seems to have become the subject matter today."

One listener told him not to be afraid and wished him well.

Tubridy updated his Instagram followers after the operation on Friday and said: "That went well. #marathon.

"Off to recuperate by watching The Sopranos for the next two days.

"Have a great weekend everyone."

Tubridy also admitted he is hopeful and looking forward to having a live audience back in the studio when the Late Late Show returns in September.

It comes as Ryan Tubridy has rubbished any rumours that he was "bullied" off Twitter and told how it was his daughter that inspired his decision to leave the platform behind.

The RTE star left the social media site behind years ago, and maintains that is one of the best decisions he has ever made.

But after many speculated why he left the platform, he shot down any notion of bullying online and told how his departure from the social media app came in a moment of ‘self realisation’ after he found himself constantly on his phone.

He said: "I've often said that the lovely thing about being online is that you can be offline.

"And one of the best things I ever did, in terms of online presence coming or going, was to leave Twitter, which I did a few years ago.

“Because I remember at the time my daughter said, 'I can't believe you're on the phone again'.

"I said, 'Gosh yeah, I'm on my phone too much'. I felt [I had] enough.

"That's been misrepresented since then that I was bullied offline, I wasn't in the slightest.

"It was just because I felt I was not leading by example so get off Twitter. Great.

"Delighted I did it. I was becoming too keen to see, 'how did that do?', or whatever.

"It was a moment of self realisation if you like, self awareness, so that was great."

He added: "I'm not anti-online. “I'm still on Instagram so this isn't a rant against online. It's just different."

Speaking to Irish author John Boyne about cancel culture and his new novel, The Echo Chamber, on his RTE Radio One show on Monday morning, the top presenter also told how he doesn't miss the drama that can come with social media.

"It's a parallel universe," the 48-year-old said, and added that he hopes the younger generation will give his age group time to adjust to the ever changing technological world.

"As I said to one of my own daughters recently and I've said it here on the radio as well that we, for a lot of us, we are a generation in transition.

"And by that I mean we're trying to come to terms with a whole new lexicon in terms of engagement in social life and normal life.

"And for teenagers and so on, you have to give us a little bit of leeway in trying to get it right."

His comments came as he made his return to the airwaves after a three week break last month.

The Late Late Show presenter had been enjoying some time off exploring the country with his two daughters Ella, 22 and Julia, 16, which he described as ‘the most beautiful week away’.

He said: “You’ll be glad to know the first week of my time off was just golden sunshine. And the country shone.

"It was beautiful everywhere we went," said Ryan.

"The sea looked gorgeous, the people were red, the rest of us were just enjoying ourselves and the place was alive, it was like it had come alive again after that awful shadow that had been cast over the country for so long."

He added: "Businesses were booming.

"There were drinks outside and outside dining was working out a treat and everyone seemed to be doing a wonderful job."

Lifting the lid on his time off, he added: “I got a great schooling from the younger people. On one of our long road trips. We had such great times driving around the country in the last few weeks.

“But one of them was on the background works of Mr Kanye West. And they played me all this amazing music, and showing me sample stuff, and into his gospel stuff, and we discussed him and his wife and all the carry one. It was remarkable. It was like a tutorial, it was great.”

Ryan also took a moment to praise young people for getting their vaccines in recent weeks saying: "They were shining last week and heading into their vaccination centres, one after another, getting their jab," he said.

"As I was bringing one such person into the centre the other day, I was parked, not too far from it.

“If you are 16, 17, 18 year-old listening today, i salute you. You are just brilliant. You get a lot of grief, but not this time. You are brilliant.”
