RTE's Ryan Tubridy recalls 'desperately sad' interview with Madeleine McCann's parents as Cleo Smith found

Ryan Tubridy has recalled his interview with the parents of Madeleine McCann after news that a four-year-old girl was found safe in Australia after two weeks missing.

Australian girl Cleo's disappearance sparked a frantic search, which came to an end when officers broke into a home and found her in one of the rooms.

Deputy commissioner Col Blanch said: “It’s my privilege to announce that in the early hours of this morning, the Western Australia police force rescued Cleo Smith. Cleo is alive and well.

“One of the officers picked her up into his arms and asked her, ‘What’s your name?’ She said, ‘My name is Cleo.’”

A short time later police were able to reunite Cleo with her family.

And the story reminded RTE host Ryan Tubridy of Madeleine McCann and when he interviewed her parents on The Late Late Show.

Tubs said: "God help us she's(Cleo) back where she's belong with her family.

"You think Madeleine McCann every time you hear of that."

He added: "I remember her parents on the Late Late Show....I don't remember ever seeing such a soul destroying depth of sadness in their eyes.

"It's desperately sad."

The search for answers in the Madeleine McCann case continues to rumble on as the parents still look for closure.
