RTE's Ryan Tubridy reacts as Netflix confirm Squid Game is the most popular series ever

RTE broadcaster Ryan Tubridy has shared his reaction to the news that Squid Game has had the most popular launch ever on Netflix.

The streaming platform confirmed that 111 million people tuned in to view the show in its first 28 days.

Bridgerton previously held the record for the most popular show to be launched on Netflix after 82 million households watched it in the first month.

Squid Game is a South Korean series that follows a group of contestants who are crippled by debt as they compete in childhood playground games.

Each contestant is competing for a huge cash prize, which becomes bigger as each person is eliminated.

However, the game has deadly consequences whereby contestants are killed if they fail a round.

Ryan Tubridy spoke about the success of the programme on his RTE Radio One show on Wednesday morning, labelling the huge viewing numbers as "rather impressive".

He said: "Squid Game has become Netflix's most popular series launch with 111 million viewers in the first month, which is rather impressive, it beats Bridgerton, it beats them all.

"I'm not going to go on about it because if you don't watch it, it's quite boring, but I will say one thing.

"The New York Times reported that the sale in tracksuits has gone through the roof.

"If you haven't seen it, this will mean nothing to you, if you have seen it, you'll understand.

"I would imagine there's a sort of irony involved in this, as well as a great Halloween costume being involved in this because they're all wearing teal green tracksuits with blood and dirt on them as they're forced to play children's games.

"But there's a big increase in demand for tracksuits as a direct result."

Tubridy has previously spoken out about the show, advising anyone who doesn't like violence to avoid watching the hit series.

The RTE host told his listeners: "I watched the most ridiculous thing, we spoke about it last week.

"How do I describe it...'Squid Game is that of a classic survival death game, except each game is based on Korean children's games. So over 400 individuals in serious debt are invited to participate in a mysterious game where they are forced to risk their lives in a series of games with an opportunity to win almost 40 million dollars.'

"All you need to know is, if you don't like violence, this is really important, if you don't like violence, or can't tolerate it on TV, do not watch this programme."
