RTE's Ryan Tubridy perplexed bizarre campaign which aims to stop 'hurting animals feelings'

Ryan Tubridy has weighed in on the latest campaign waged by the animal rights group People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals aka PETA.

The RTE radio host dedicated the opening of his radio slot this morning to talk about a new initiative launched by the group which is known for its extreme views on animal rights.

In the past the group has staged a number of shocking protests while also setting up divisive and often over the top campaigns aimed at get getting the public's attention.

And it seems the group's latest moved caught the eye of the veteran broadcaster.

During his RTE Radio 1 morning radio show Tubs spoke about a new initiative sparked by PETA which seeks to change how we use animal terms as insults in our daily language.

Tubs started his show saying: "PETA have been calling for a debate on speciesism.

Sounding quite perplexed about the issue Tubs went on: "It would appear to be making comments that might be offensive or unkind about animals.

"It warned against using words like chicken to describe a word like coward was an anti-animal slur. So we can' say 'ah don't be such a big chicken'.

"You might just hurt that chicken's feelings and that wouldn't be fair. And they have urged followers to reject supremacist language that might degrade animals by applying certain negative human traits to a species.

They say calling someone an animal as an insult reinforced the myth that humans are superior to other animals and therefore justified in violating them.

"So the animal rights organisation says you should say 'snitch' instead of rat. Say lazy instead of 'sloth'. And instead of calling someone a pig, which you shouldn't anyway, say repulsive.

"Well there's probably no harm in that."
