RTE's Ryan Tubridy on why he won't book flight abroad right now

RTE's Ryan Tubridy has explained that he won't book a flight abroad until he is legally allowed.

The Irish public may have to wait until at least August before jetting off on holiday after Tanaiste Leo Varadkar issued another blow to foreign travel on Monday.

It had been hoped that Irish people may get away on a foreign holiday as early as July with the vaccination programme on track.

And Ryan Tubridy told listeners on his RTE Radio One programme he'll have to "wait and see what happens" before making any plans.

He said: "I wouldn't book a flight anywhere at any time until I have better knowledge.

"I'll only go when I'm allowed go, I'll just wait and see.

"Do I want get on flight and go somewhere? Of course I do like everyone else, there are loads of places I'd like to go.

"I've learned of loads of places that I probably wouldn't go to unless the pandemic had hit like Iceland.

"I'd like to go Iceland now.

"I'll go there in the event of flights to Reykjavik(Iceland capital) being available.

"I just don't know when. Apparently lots of people in the UK are going to Portugal."

Mr Varadkar also reminded people it is currently "against the law" to travel abroad for non-essential reasons, which holidays most definitely would be.

The EU Parliament is set to approve the new Green Certificate Regulation that opens up travel across the continent again from late next month.

Mr Varadkar said: "I think it's more towards the end of the summer, that it's more likely around August at the earliest before we'll be saying to people that it's okay to engage in non-essential international travel."

He added: "Some countries might say a test is enough, other countries might say you have to be vaccinated, other countries might say, you might have to be vaccinated and have a test.

"There will be large parts of the world that will not be vaccinated fully or even extensively until the middle of next year.

"Australia, New Zealand, China and others will not be vaccinated until the middle of next year.

"Large parts of the developing world, India, Brazil, aren't going to be vaccinated for quite some time as well.

"I think we will have some form of mandatory hotel quarantine for people travelling to and from those high risk areas."

There was slightly better news for those wishing to travel to mainland Britain as Mr Varadkar said that the Common Travel Area would hopefully be reopened soon.

He said: "It is my ambition, intention and hope that we're going to be able to restore the Common Travel Area with Britain very soon."

The Green Cert when it arrives will have three sections, vaccination, test and recovery.

It will show if you have received a vaccine, if you have had a full PCR test with a negative result, and if you have had the virus and recovered.
