RTE's Ryan Tubridy moved by 'stranger' on TV as he sends message to 'princess'

RTE's Ryan Tubridy was audibly moved this morning as he paid tribute to the amazing young girl who switched on Dublin's Christmas lights for 2020.

The Dubliner hailed Symone Rowley, the 11-year-old who hit the big switch last night, for bringing "something really special to my life" in the form of the Grafton Street lights.

Tubs was clearly touched by the efforts of Symone, who's a patient at Temple Street Children's Hospital, after Dublin flooded with Christmas light.

"As streetlight turning-on goes, she was a princess among princes and princesses," the 47-year-old gushed.

"It was a remarkable performance, because without her, we wouldn't have had the lights, and the brightness, and the sparkles.

"So thank you, Symone, for bringing that lovely light to our lives on the news last night."

Last night, Symone told RTE News she hoped that in the act of turning on the lights she could bring happiness to the country.

And if Tubridy was anything to go by this morning, she certainly achieved that goal.

Tubs added: "It made my heart skip a beat, for about 10,000 different reasons.

"So whoever you are, I don't know you, but I'm sending you my love and my gratitude, because you brought something really special to my life last night.

"I thought: 'Great. If Simone's happy, I'm happy. And all the staff were around her, cheering her on, and I thought: 'If they're happy, I'm happy.'

"And the lights came on, and I said: 'If the lights are sparkling, I'm sparkling, goddammit.'

"We're going to do this – we're going to do this. We're going to Christmas the bejaysus out of this. We're going to do it."

Tubs, a massive Christmas fan, has been teasing fans of the Late Late Toy Show for weeks with hints about what the iconic RTE staple could look like in 2020.

The ad for the Toy Show – which premiered last week on the Six One news – had many reaching for the tissues with an emotional depiction of a Covid-19 Christmas.

Tubridy called the ad "beautiful", and you'd be hard pushed to find anyone to disagree with that assessment.
