RTE's Ryan Tubridy in stitches with hilarious response to Jamie Dornan and Emily Blunt in Wild Mountain Thyme

RTE's Ryan Tubridy was in stitches this morning as he weighed in on an issue that has gripped Ireland in recent days – the upcoming Wild Mountain Thyme film.

The 47-year-old had his say on a film that has convulsed social media, with Tubs struggling to keep the laughter out of his voice as he wondered aloud about many aspects of the production.

Wild Mountain Thyme certainly boasts a star-studded cast – including Jamie Dornan, Emily Blunt and Christopher Walken – but many have been left wishing the ground would swallow them up after the release of a trailer that features some very interesting attempts at Irish accents.

Tubridy urged his listeners to watch the film before judging it – insisting he "can't knock it" based solely on the trailer.

But he chuckled: "It is amazing, and the accents are extraordinary, and I don't know what it is.

The new film is set in Ireland and is due to be released in December (Kerry Browm / Bleecker street)

"You would expect Bing Crosby to be drafted in as the local priest."

The Dubliner's response to the film was in keeping with many others online, with many cringing at its twee depiction of Ireland and the cliches laced through it.

Wild Mountain Thyme is directed by Oscar-winning writer John Patrick Shanley, and based on his critically acclaimed play Outside Mullingar, but the trailer has left many wondering if this is a film that has missed the mark.

A mischievous Tubs couldn't help pointing out the etymology of its title, which appears to come from a Scottish folk song.

"So already I think we're on the wrong foot, if we're talking about an Irish film," said Tubridy on radio this morning.

"It is amazing, and the accents are extraordinary, and I don't know what it is," he added.

But while many have made their mind up about the film – and decided it's not worth taking too seriously – Tubs called for calm.

"Nobody has seen it – we're just judging it on trailers, which isn't fair.

"Until we see the whole thing, we can't judge it. So let's wait, and then judge it."
