RTE's Ryan Tubridy hails Dublin bar for move to prevent Covid cases

RTE broadcaster Ryan Tubridy has praised the efforts of one hospitality venue to prevent coronavirus from spreading among patrons.

Dublin venue Pygmalion will offer all ticketholders for its club nights a free antigen test on arrival.

The popular bar, which along with other hospitality businesses already asks customers for vaccine certs, announced the move on Monday.

A spokesperson said: "We feel that this is best practice for our staff and customers alongside the need to produce a digital Covid vaccination certificate, and purchasing tickets for contact tracing purposes.

"Negative test results will be necessary for entry to the venue, if a customer receives a positive result outside the venue then a refund will be issued. Tests will be self-administered, and there will be assistance available if necessary.

"Countries such as Germany and Sweden have had success with antigen testing with support from their respective governments in implementing testing. Research shows rapid tests are 99.9% accurate.

"This means the chance of getting a false-positive result (where the result shows as positive but is actually negative) is extremely low.

"We have seen how venues similar to ours have reopened safely with antigen testing in place, this was also in place for Ireland's pilot nightclub event which took place on September 30."

RTE's Ryan Tubridy praised the idea on his Radio One show on Tuesday morning, describing it as a great initiative from the South William Street premises to prevent transmission of Covid-19.

He said the move was "smart" as "you would be comfortable going there knowing that" everyone has tested negative before they can enter.

"That's going all the way isn't it," he said, adding that checking vaccine certs in such venues "was only right and correct".

"That's getting your act together and keeping it going," Tubs added.
