RTE's Ryan Tubridy doesn't get one Irish attitude towards masks in the pandemic

Ryan Tubridy has jokingly questioned why Irish people don't do one crucial thing when it comes to the wearing of masks.

One of the biggest things to help prevent the spread of coronavirus is the wearing of face coverings - particularly in indoor settings.

And speaking on his RTE Radio show this morning, Tubridy told us of a major new programme being introduced by the United States:

"There's a new initiative from the Department of Health in the US trying to do something quite simple - produce a face mask.

"We've seen people who have skin irritation, and things that happen to me like my glasses getting steamed up after all this time. Some people are softly spoken so if you have a mask on and say they're behind a perspex screen or something, it can get quite difficult, there could be communication difficulties. So what the DOH are doing is offering $500,000 to make a mask that everyone can use!"

Listeners responded in with a number of stories, leading to Tubs talking about how some people 'shouttalk'.

Tubs said: "What this is, what I'm referring to is when you see someone you know in the street or wherever and instead of just continuing to converse they pull down the mask and roar at you!

"You would see things like this happening in Germany or Sweden or wherever and they would just say 'pull up your mask please' but what is it about the Irish? Why don't we as a species tell someone to pull their mask up when they pull it down?!"

It is a good point and Tubridy added: "In Ireland we go ' ah sure, spit it all over me' and I mustn't have Covid because we've antibodies now, go on sure.

"Is it because we get upset and bent over about apologising? I don't get it!"

Meanwhile, Tommy Tiernan has swiped more than 70,000 viewers from Tubridy’s Late Late Show - as the comedian surpasses over half a million viewers to his chat show.

The Navan funnyman continues to be a hit with viewers and telly bosses with his laid-back unscripted Saturday night chat show.

In the latest figures by RTE, an average of 436,000 people tuned into Friday night’s Late Late Show, while an average of 506,000 people watched Tommy Tiernan on Saturday night.
