RTE's Ryan Tubridy blown away by Phillip Schofield's emotional Late Late Show interview

Ryan Tubridy was blown away by Phillip Schofield's emotional interview on tonight's Late Late Show.

The This Morning host revealed his decision to come out earlier this year was driven by a motivation to 'save myself' and he admitted it got that dark.

Phillip, who has been married to Steph for 27 years, came out publicly earlier this year.

The 58 year-old recalled how he was driven 300 miles to Cornwall to tell his mother, who is in her eighties, his news in February.

The dad-of-two said: "She had already asked me months before, 'are you OK, you look skinny...you look sad, I know there's something wrong'.

Phillip told Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show he has a condition that causes his eyes to blur, and his mother initially thought his news related to that.

He added: "I said 'Mum, I have something to tell you', and I told her and she said 'Oh, oh right OK, thank god for that, I thought you were going blind...those things in your eyes, that's alright, so long as you are OK and Steph's OK and the girls are OK'. My mum suddenly turned into this incredibly modern, forward-thinking 84-year-old and we have these incredible really good solid chats...that's actually worked out really well."

Philip also told how his weight plummeted to well under nine stone as he grappled with the idea of coming out.

The TV star also praised the support of his co-presenter and friend Holly Willoughby when he revealed the news live on air in February of this year.

Phil, recently said him and his wife Stephanie have not talked about divorce since he revealed to her that he was gay.

He said of their relationship: “We’re picking our way through. It’s a work in progress.”

He added: "When I knew, Steph knew, I wouldn't have got married if I had known. It was absolutely not a factor, it was not in my head... we had a wonderful marriage, have a wonderful marriage, Steph and I, we are still holding on as much as we can."
