RTE's Ryan Tubridy blasts Margaret Thatcher and explains why he hasn't watched Netflix drama The Crown

Ryan Tubridy didn't hold back this morning as he gave both barrels to Margaret Thatcher, as well as explaining why it is that he hasn't tuned in properly to hit Netflix drama The Crown.

Tubs was giggling on the airwaves this morning as he described public confusion at the portrayal of Thatcher by Gillian Anderson – the actress well known for her roles in The Fall and the X Files – in the acclaimed drama.

"It's in this season where it's Gillian Anderson from the X Files playing Margaret Thatcher, and everyone is very, very confused," chuckled the 47-year-old, adding: "Men of a certain vintage are very confused about how to take all of that – very confused.

"No-one should ever fancy Margaret Thatcher, under any circumstances. Any – political or amorous. Now that's all changed."

Tubridy told listeners he watched four episodes of The Crown before switching off. "I said: 'That is putting me to sleep. I want to watch a television programme that keeps me going.'"

But if he wasn't exactly full of praise for Thatcher, or The Crown, then the Dubliner did reserve lavish praise for a series he has just started watching – the US political satire Veep.

Tubridy urged listeners to tune into the show, which focuses on the US White House and has been hailed by viewers and critics alike.

"It's one of the funniest programmes I've ever seen in my life," he said.

"It's a post-presidential election comedown for me. It's 20-minute bitesize – it's Armando Iannuci, who did The Thick of It, and a lot of Alan Partridge.

"It is so fully of zingers, and cleverness, and everything. I can't stop laughing. It is just a joy, and I'm going to watch every single episode, from beginning to end. Because it's wonderful."

It's hardly a surprise that Tubs has fallen for Veep, given his famous obsession with all things American politics.

The RTE host also talked up Barack Obama's recently released autobiography, A Promised Land, hailing the writing and storytelling ability of the former US president.
