RTE's Ryan Tubridy astonished at latest bizarre Covid-19 trend involving adults, nappies and airplanes

Ryan Tubridy rarely shies away from tackling a bizarre trend head-on – but the RTE host might have found the most bizarre pandemic phenomenon yet.

The 47-year-old couldn't hold in the giggles this morning on radio as he told listeners about startling new medical advice for cabin crew working on airplanes in China.

The country's aviation regulator this week advised cabin crew to avoid the toilets due to the risk of Covid-19 – and instead asked them to wear nappies on board.

Nappies, in the new advice, form part of the personal protective equipment (PPE) that air hosts and other crew are urged to wear while on the flight.

While Tubs could see the logic in the recommendation ("it's no secret that lavatories can be the germiest place in an airplane"), he couldn't stop himself from having a little fun with it.

"Imagine! Imagine them serving you," said Tubs, before acting out the scenes that could soon be taking place on Chinese airplanes.

"Can I... Now! Can I help you?'

"And you say: 'What was that pause for?'

"And they say: 'What do you think? I'm wearing a nappy.' I mean, don't you know how these things work?"

As well as discussing the bizarre practice, Tubs also gave listeners an excited update about Friday night's special episode of the Late Late Show.

U2, Glen Hansard and Shane MacGowan are joining forces this week to ring out the year with a very special Grafton Street Busk.

Ten years ago, Glen Hansard first took to Grafton Street with an ensemble of well-known musician friends to raise money for Ireland's homeless, a tradition that he has kept going since.

This year, as the traditional Christmas Eve busk cannot take place in Dublin city centre, Tubs and his team are bringing the magic of the annual event directly into viewer's homes in aid of the Simon Community.
