RTE's Ryan Andrews discusses ‘heated’ times in Fair City and reveals why he didn't go for Disney role

Fair City’s Ryan Andrews teased ‘heated’ scenes in the soap this week and told how he's ready to venture for roles outside of Carrigstown whilst some of the biggest Hollywood hitters are in town.

He is best known for his role as Sean Cassidy in the Irish soap, having first arrived in Carrigstown as a fresh faced teen in 2008 and has been at the centre of some of the programme's biggest storylines to date.

But having taken some time out to compete in Dancing with the Stars last year, and the pandemic hitting shortly after, the 28-year-old admitted he has been itching to get his hands on another juicy plot after watching the show’s domestic abuse trial play out from the sidelines as a fan.

Teasing tense scenes as his things ramp up for Sean this week as he finds himself in the middle of the drugs saga taking over Carrigstown, he told Irish Daily Mirror: “We go to a read through every Monday morning, and we hear the scripts being read for the first time.

“And some people have like the court case with Cristiano and Will, and I am going ‘ah yeah, like a fan, that’s good, give me some of that’.

“I’m actually back on air at the moment and for the next couple of weeks and I am involved in a storyline that gets really heated and tension builds up over the next two weeks.

“And I was delighted to be a part of it, and it is actually really good.”

In tomorrow’s episode, Seán’s departure from Number 41 to escape the drugs drama creates strife between Dolores and Pete, as Seán warns Pete to return the stash of drugs that he took.

The Dubliner said: “There are a few twists and turns, and even when I was reading it, I was going, ‘what’s the next page?’ And you are waiting for the next script and I love that.

“Because there are a lot of times where you might not get that buzz but with this particular storyline I got that buzz again.

“And that’s what you do it for, that excitement and that thrill.”

Meanwhile, as Disney, Netflix and a flurry of Hollywood producers have set up filming sets for major projects nationwide, the former Dancing with the Stars finalist opened up about his plans to take on the acting world outside of Carrigstown this year.

He said: “It’s brilliant, even with Disenchanted, a lot of the dancers that were my friends who I grew up with, performers, and it never bothers me whether I am in it or not.

“I just love the fact that people that you know and respect so much and have put their whole lives into this industry are able to work whether it is camera crew, mic men, I’ve worked with them, and you just want everyone to be happy and working, it doesn’t necessarily have to be you.

“Disenchanted and the Disney thing has been a huge huge income and a job for a lot of my friends.

“The more people that come over here, there more that are employed, the more work, it is just better for everyone all round.

“And it just creates the buzz to be a performer in Ireland and then hopefully one day it will be me.

Ryan explained he held back from putting his name in the hat this year, to focus on moving into his new house with his long-time partner Michaela O'Neill, and adapting his stage school to work virtually amid the pandemic.

“In the last year I kind of took a step back from all of that to focus on getting the house, stage school, the panto, the drive in Park N Party, and said I want to work on me and my businesses and how I can push myself.

“Because ultimately there are times, and it has happened before, where I’ve gone for certain things, and I've taken a long time out, and you’d be a week filming somewhere, and it means you have to cancel two or three things elsewhere.

“And I did it all the way up.

“But in the last year or so I said I need to get myself sorted and everything in place.”

But ready to put himself back on the circuit, he said:

“Hopefully now everything is in place and I can start getting back on the audition scenes and into other stuff which I’m actually really excited about.”

In the meantime, he is ready to get back in action in live performances, as the co-host of ‘The Live Drive-In PARK N PARTY’, a new drive-in show coming this summer.

The drive-in show is appearing at Malahide Castle (30th July - 2nd Aug. ’21), Junction 14 Mayfield, Kildare (6th - 8th Aug. ’21) and the Black Box Galway (27th - 29th Aug. ’21).

Tickets, €49.50 per car, go on sale Friday, 9th July 2021 at 9am from www.thelivedrivein.ie
