RTE's Oliver Callan jokes about Ryan Tubridy's staycation plans as he keeps the host's seat warm

Listeners to Ryan Tubridy’s morning radio show were greeted with the dulcet tones of Oliver Callan this morning as the host takes a well earned break for a fortnight.

Ryan, who celebrated his 48th birthday last Friday as he presented the final Late Late Show of the season, is currently on a staycation since foreign travel is still not an option.

Last month he told his listeners what his plans were for his fortnights holidays saying: "I'm definitely going to do it (climb Carrauntoohil), I just need to find the right circumstances and the right person.

"Should I go up Carrauntoohil with somebody who knows the territory?

"I think I'd like to do that, I think it would be really gorgeous.

"I have a good pair of hiking boots.

"I'm also hoping I might get back to Skibbereen at some point to do a proper Famine trail visit.

"I have loads of things, I'd like to be doing and spending my time catching up on gorgeous things we couldn't do for the last little while."

And Oliver couldn’t wait to poke fun at his plans as he opened the show saying: “You’ll have to wait a fortnight to hear if he scaled Carrauntoohil ."

He continued to joke: “But if you hear on the news that maybe the coastguard has been called out to rescue a formally trousered man who badly suffered a torn elbow patch on the Devils Ladder do not be surprised. He’ll be alright. They’ll probably winch him to a pub with carpet or something.”

Carrauntoohil (Failte Ireland)

Carrauntoohil is Ireland’s highest mountain standing at 1,039m and is set among the Macgillycuddy Reeks in Co Kerry.

According to Outsider magazine anyone attempting to hike it is “strongly advised to always carry a map, or go with a guide if you’re not that experienced and haven’t navigated or climbed the mountain before.”

Climbing the mountain usually takes anything between 5-7 hours.
