RTE's Oliver Callan blown away by TV show My Tribe and wants to see change in nightlife licensing laws

RTE's Oliver Callan was blown away by a new TV programme My Tribe and wants to see changes in nightlife licensing laws.

The Monaghan man is filling in for Ryan Tubridy on his morning radio slot this week.

My Tribe is a programme about subcultures, clothing and music.

Oliver told listeners on Radio One this morning: "It was a great bilingual programme narrated by Peter Coonan, Fran from Love/Hate.

"It was all about the underground worlds of music, youth culture movements.

"This particular episode was all about dance, raves, fashion and house music in the 90s.

"The fashion was great and the stories were fantastic."

Licensing laws is an important topic for Callan and he feels it needs to be adressed.

He added: "What was relevant about the episode for now and today was their discussion for licensing laws.

"The sacrifices that industry is going through now.

"Venues need an alcohol license which is very difficult and expensive.

"Some of the young people didn't want alcohol, they just wanted to dance into the small hours.

"Pubs close at half twelve and nightclubs close at half two, so there is a two hour window.

"If ever there is an opportunity to reform those laws it is now.

"Maybe they will look at those laws for the post pandemic boom that we hope is on it's way."

Oliver and his partner John moved out of Dublin when the pandemic struck last year.

He is glad for the space and quiet in the countryside where they live on the Louth and Monaghan border.
