RTE's money guru lists top seven tips for saving money ahead of Christmas period

RTE's financial adviser Eoin McGee has shared seven money saving tips to help people to manage their money better.

Coming up to Christmas, many people will be feeling the strain of having to pay out large sums of money as they scramble to the shops to pick up the perfect present.

In the lead up to the festival period, some won't have saving on their minds. However, Mr McGee says now is always the perfect time to begin.

In an Instagram post, he said: "Do you need help saving?

"I've made some top savings tips to get you started!

"Do you have a tip that should be added to the list?"

The finance expert shared the seven following tips:

1. Start – It doesn't matter at what level just start!

2. Identify your saving habit

3. Save when you get paid!

4. Build from the ground up!

5. Automate your saving!

6. Separate your accounts!

7. Make it hard to access!

Followers also headed to the comment section to share their tips on how they began saving in a more effective way to reach their goals sooner.

One person said: "Save for a purpose. Have a target or a goal in mind. It can be quite motivating to see the amount saved increase over time. It creates a sense of achievement."

Another agreed with Mr McGee saying having automated savings helped him to stay on track without being tempted to access the saving account.

He said: "Definitely automate savings into a non instant access account to make it harder to move it back to your current account.

"I actually used a passbook only account in an area I previously lived that had no branches in my new area - to access my savings

"I would have had to wait for a day off and drive 50 miles - that helped! It sounds over the top but I knew my own weaknesses."

Mr McGeen offered some more advice in a separate post, saying: "Being good with money is all about getting the foundations right.

"Having spending rules in place can help you plan for those big money events!"
