RTE's Maura Derrane says she’d be a ‘complete slob’ if she didn’t work in television

Maura Derrane admits she’d probably be a ‘complete slob’ if she didn’t have to be television ready everyday.

The TV presenter is a regular face in homes nationwide daily on RTE’s Today Show with Daithi O’Se, and is often hailed for her new hair-dos, and telly style.

However, as many worldwide adapted loungewear and the more casual work from home lifestyles over the past year, the mum-of-one admitted she’d be a ‘mess’ if she didn’t have to appear on TV everyday.

She said: “People are like, ‘I’m dying to dress up’ and loads of my friends are saying they’re dying to put on a pair of heels and some lipstick and i’m like, I do that every day.

“I would probably be a mess, I have to admit, i’d be a complete slob if I didn’t work on television.”

Growing up in a family of four girls, Maura said she was always into make-up and fashion, and went on:

“I love red lips, I love a bright lipstick, it just makes me happy.”

“I’ve been so lucky that I got to be almost in the real world with my job, dressing up everyday.

The Inis Mor native also told how she has recently been rediscovering her childhood love of cycling, as the pandemic continues.

She told the RTE Guide: “I cycled so much as a child on the island.

“The bike was our mode of transport for getting around. I gave it up for a lot of years and I didn’t cycle and now, I’m starting to cycle again and I think it’s great.

“It’s a good workout for me,” she added, admitting she is the most ‘unsporty person’ that ever lived.

“To be honest, I could not kick a ball to save my life or do any of those sport things. I hated all that stuff.”

Once the afternoon show, which she now hosts three days a week, wraps up for the summer, and her son Cal, seven, gets his summer holidays, Maura and her hubby John Deasy plan to head for her home on the Aran Islands as they do each year.

“For me it’s almost like the best staycation in the world,” she gushed.

Meanwhile, as the Today team finish out their ninth season, and start preparing for the tenth run later on this year she said she’s proud of how far they have come since starting out in the Cork based studio almost a decade ago.

“I’m looking forward to ten years. I think it’s no mean feat to do this.”

In September, Maura decided to take a step back on the show, and cut down her hosting days from five to three to make more time for family life and her son Cal, seven.

She now hosts Wednesday, Thursday and Friday's alongside co-host O'Se, whilst Sinead Kennedy joined the team on Monday and Tuesdays before she went on maternity leave in Spring.

The Today Show studio has since seen a host of new faces in front of the camera in the past few months, with Blathnaid Treacy, Rachel Allen and Una Healy among a rotation of new presenters that have been fronting the show in Sinead's absence.
