RTE’s Maura Derrane jokes Daithi O’Se is 'going through a midlife crisis' after claiming they’re not friends outside of work

RTE star Maura Derrane says she suspects her co-host Daithi O’Se is going through a midlife crisis after he claimed the pair rarely speak or socialise outside of work.

The TV duo, who are about to start their 10th season of co-hosting the Today Show, are known for their on-screen chemistry so naturally fans were surprised when earlier this week, Daithi said their key to success is keeping their distance outside of work.

Speaking after he made the comments Maura admitted she was surprised to read what Daithi said in the RTE Guide, and said she quickly confronted her ‘frenemy’ to see what the story was, RSVP Live reports.

“The first thing I thought when I read that was ‘God, obviously I have a different friendship to Dáithí than he has with me so I really must call him and ask ‘Did we fall out along the way because I don’t’ remember?,’” she told Evoke.

“I actually texted him and said ‘Hello, frenemy. What’s the story like?”

Maura added that of course after ten years of living in each other’s pockets Monday to Friday, they like to decompress over their annual summer break, but nevertheless they are very much still friends.

“It’s good to decompress afterwards. But I’m still friends with him – I don’t know what he’s on about!”

And she even speculated that her TV hubby could be simply having a mid-life crisis.

“I think Dáithí must be having a midlife crisis because I don’t remember any fallings out with him.”

Earlier this week, Dáithí told the RTE Guide: “When I finish the run in May, I won’t speak with Maura again until a week or so before we go back on air in September.

“We are never in each other’s pockets and we’ve never pretended to be best friends, hanging out with each other after work and all that".

He added: “The only time we spend together is the time in rehearsal or live on the show and that has worked for both of us".

When Today does return to screens on Monday, 27th September, it will look very different after the show underwent a complete revamp to celebrate it's 10th anniversary. The changes include an updated logo, new set, fresh theme tune and even a new presenter.

Last year Maura stepped back from the show and reduced her schedule to three shows a week, with Sinead Kennedy stepping in alongside Daithi on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Today returns weekday afternoons on RTE One at 3.30pm from next Monday 27th September.
