RTE's Joe Duffy speaks with Irish cyclist on Liveline after incident at Wicklow's Sally Gap 'almost killed him'

An Irish cyclist told RTÉ Radio’s Liveline about an incident that could have killed him while he was out on his bike.

The incident occurred last weekend when the cyclist, John, was pushed off his bike by a group of men in a car at the Sally Gap in Wicklow.

A young man reportedly leaned out of the window of a passing car and pushed the cyclist off his bike - an action he said could have left him paralysed, as he warned other cyclists to take care in the area.

After a kind motorist pulled over to help him, he rang into Joe Duffy to try and figure out who they were.

At this point, John did not know that the incident had been filmed - until it was shown to him by Liveline.

Joe Duffy asked the young men involved in the incident, who could be identified from the video, to give themselves into the gardaí.

Speaking about the repercussions of the incident, the injured man said he was not able to sleep after it occurred, saying; “you’d be thinking about it.”

The cyclist also said he “would be fearful” of reporting the people involved after they “had the mentality to do that”.

He told the radio host that he believes it was done as a sort of “challenge” set out by young people to target a cyclist - and that he had heard of it happening before.

Since speaking on air, he has informed the gardaí and says they are taking matters very seriously.
