RTE's Joe Duffy horrified at story of 16-year-old girl being sexually harassed at work

Joe Duffy was shocked and appalled after hearing from a 16-year-old girl who has been sexually harassed while working in a food van down in Cork.

The young girl’s mum, Annie Roche, took to Twitter earlier this week to say that her daughter had been in tears for ‘two hours’ after coming home from a day's work following several incidents of sexual harassment from grown men.

Ms Roche said these unwelcome advances came because her daughter was wearing a penny’s vest top and “happens to have boobs.”

As a result of the harassment, the young girl felt she had to go to work covered up amid the intense heat Ireland has been experiencing to avoid further incidents - while her mum had to resort to ensuring she had the number of a local garda station on her phone while in work.

Speaking to RTE’s Joe Duffy this afternoon on Liveline, she said: "Last week, in the heat, she was trying to wear something that wouldn't draw too much attention, and she shouldn’t have to worry about that."

Saoirse, 16, also spoke to Joe today about the sexual harassment she's experiencing during her summer work and said a man in his 50s who knows her, “still makes advances”.

She said: "I dread them coming up...they do back off a small bit but it's reoccurring."

Listeners of the show were enraged over the story and have called for cameras to be put in place to catch the culprits.
