Joe Duffy has hailed Irish actress Nicola Coughlan for her performance in Netflix's new period drama Bridgerton.
The RTE host was stunned by Coughlan's "powerful" display in the 19th-century romance series, paying tribute to the Derry Girls star in a heartfelt tweet.
The Dubliner said Coughlan will "go from strength to strength" in 2021 after she excelled in the show everyone is talking about.
Nicola plays Penelope Featherington in the series, which is narrated by the mysterious Lady Whistledown and has been described as the 19th-century answer to Gossip Girl.
It has been adapted from Julia Quinn's series of Bridgerton romance novels – which have sold more than 10 million copies in the US and been translated into 32 languages around the world.
Speaking about the genre of romance novels, Galway native Coughlan said: "I think they definitely can be [looked down upon], but that's part of the show's secret power in a way, because it's a genre that hasn't been explored much on television."
Its producer, Shonda Rhimes, created medical drama Grey's Anatomy and political thriller Scandal.
Aside from Joe's rave review, it has received mostly positive responses from critics, with many lauding it for the "escapism" it offers at the end of a particularly rough 2020.
Well done, Nicola.
