RTE's George Lee offers health update as he's forced to take work break

RTE's George Lee has said he is 'enormously grateful to wonderful surgeons' after he underwent an emergency operation last week.

The Environment Correspondent has been forced to take a break from work after having emergency surgery on his back.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Lee said he would no longer be able to travel to Glasgow for the COP26 Climate Conference, which is due to begin this weekend.

Mr Lee had hoped to report from the Conference of the Parties (COPs) this year, which is an annual summit that aims to devise a plan to get runaway climate change under control.

In a statement on Twitter, he said: "Unfortunately I am unable to travel to Glasgow to report from the COP26 Climate Conference starting this weekend. Had emergency back surgery last week.

"Enormously grateful to wonderful surgeons at the Mater Hospital. Thankfully I am recovering now and all is well."

RTE's Northern Correspondent Conor Macauley will now take Mr Lee's place as he makes his way over to Glasgow to begin reporting on the events of the summit.

Wishing Mr Macauley all the best, Mr Lee said: "Very best wishes to RTE Northern Correspondent Conor Macauley who has been drafted in at short notice to replace me at #COP26".

Colleagues were quick to wish Mr Lee all the best in his recovery as they look forward to his return to the office.

RTE's Miriam O'Callaghan said: "Sorry to hear this George – mind yourself, rest lots, get better and hopefully see you very soon x".

Virgin Media News Correspondent Richard Chambers also wished George a fast recovery saying: "Hope you're ok George – and speedy recovery to you!"
