RTE's Brendan O'Connor opens up about death of brother in emotional chat with Hector

RTE's Brendan O'Connor has said he didn't cope well with the death of his older brother 20 years ago.

Brian, who the presenter described as his "mentor", died at a young age which the radio star admitted was a traumatic experience.

Speaking on his own Saturday morning radio show, Brendan said: "You expect to come to a stage in life where you might lose your siblings but when it happens early like that it's a unique thing."

He added: "I wouldn't say I handled it very well."

Hector Ó hEochagáin, who was appearing on the show, lost his brother earlier this year, and agreed that it was an experience like no other.

Asked if he handled it well, the tv star said: "No, I sat in the garden and dranks cups of tea and questioned a lot of stuff.

"It's horrific, it's something no book or no course, I don't know who can teach you about this.

"I really don't, I think it's for the brain to decipher in its own way, for the body to pour its sadness, I was whaling and sore and empty and lost and lonely and felt s**t.

"We have to share these stories."

Hector, described his death as a "sledgehammer" as Brendan opened up on what his sibling meant to him.

He added: "My brother would have been a bit older than me but he would have been my mentor in terms of music and books and all of that kind of stuff, we would have had a special relationship in that kind of way."

Comedian Hector went on to describe how Freddie, described as a fit man, died suddenly while cycling to work in Copenhagen.

It was later diagnosed as Arteriosclerosis with Hector pleading with men to get a blood test and check their cholesterol to avoid similar tragedies.
