RTE's Angela Scanlon plans home birth due to fear of hospitals

Broadcaster Angela Scanlon joined Amy Huberman on her Mamia and Me podcast and opened up about her birth plans as she expects her second child with husband Roy Horgan.

Angela gave birth to her first child, three-year-old Ruby, in hospital, but told Amy that this time round she would rather be at home.

"I'm hoping to do a home birth. I feel really excited. Apparently, somebody brings a bath. I haven't nailed down the details as of yet and Roy is a little worried about it.": Angela told Amy.

"See, I just think I'll be in my own bath, which is literally my happy place. Roy keeps saying "And where's Ruby going to be?" and I was thinking maybe she'd like to be a part of the birthing process, and he was like "Are you kidding? I saw you. It's like an animal".

"So, yeah it might be a little frightening for her."

She added: "I didn't realise that I'm quite scared of hospitals for whatever reason. I've never spent very much time in hospitals so maybe that's why, or maybe I remember it from being a baby.

"Everything looked so medical, which was quite a scary thing. So if I'm at home it'll be more chilled."

Looking back at her last birth, the RTE host said: "Last time I was eight centimetres by the time I reached the hospital. I was in complete denial. She was due on the 28 February and was born on the 25 February.

"But, in my mind, I was convinced that she was going to be born on the 14 March for no reason at all. So I hadn't packed my hospital bag. There's so much focus on the birth and the labour, and then you think "Oh, nobody really told me there's going to be a baby at the end of this".

Angela revealed the news of her pregnancy when she shared an Instagram post in October, writing:

"Baby Horgan The Second (official title) arrives next spring."
