RTE Room To Improve star Dermot Bannon's surprising admission about show and being the 'uncool dad'

Room To Improve star Dermot Bannon has revealed he never watches his hit show once it airs, saying he hates watching himself back on TV.

The hugely popular show returns this Sunday on RTE One but the Dubliner won't be tuning in.

The 49-year-old said: “Once the show goes out on air, I never watch it again.”

But he said he would still track any comments made about him online.

“Even the one’s that are cutting because you have to take a step back and think, if it wasn’t about me, would I still think it was funny?,” he told the RTE Guide.

And he said he doesn’t mind when satirists have parodied him as the man who’d build a house out of windows.

“I do like a nice bit of window,” he added.

Dermot also opened about fatherhood, saying his 14-year-old son James hates when he drives him to the school gates, despite being so well known.

“My son James started secondary school last year and now he doesn’t want me driving him to the school gates in case his classmates recognise me.

“The lockdowns were great for the kids because I had to wear a mask and was not so easily recognised.

“I’m an uncool dad. But I don’t want to be a cool dad because if they think I’m cool, there’s something wrong isn’t there?

“If my kids thought I was cool, I’d be horrified,” he added.

The Dubliner also admitted he has been approached to write a children's book.

The celebrity architect said last year he was approached by a publisher to write a children’s book on architecture.

But the father-of-three said his ambitions to become a children’s author has been put on the back burner as he’s more focussed on his new series.
