RTE Room to Improve star Dermot Bannon reveals 'horrendous' Instagram message sent by one viewer

Celebrity architect Dermot Bannon has shared how he is affected by trolls and opened up on some of the "nasty" abuse he receives online.

The Room to Improve star is often mentioned by people on social media commenting on his weekly RTE show.

The programme receives "a huge amount of tweets", some of which include "horrendous" personal messages, Bannon said.

After 13 seasons presenting the popular home improvement show, he said he has "heard it all", and revealed what he finds hardest about the negative comments.

"I read some of [the tweets], I can't keep up with them," he said.

"There was a stage I stayed up until 2am reading them all and someone would put up a really nasty message and I'd like it and then they'd get freaked out.

"There's nothing I haven't read about myself at this stage. It's all water off a duck's back. Some of them I find hilarious and clever.

"They don't know you and they're just trying to be funny."

Bannon then opened up on one "horrendous" message he received from a viewer, adding that it's "part of the territory".

"There was one that the language was horrendous that was sent to me on Instagram and then I liked it and then he got freaked out the next day and says 'Oh my god I feel really bad'," he told RTE's Ray D'Arcy show on Thursday.

"But, look that's part of it. I don't enjoy it but I don't mind it either.

"I kind of accept that when you're doing something like this, it comes with the territory."

The worst part is when his clients receive negative comments after appearing on Room to Improve, he said.

"I find it harder when clients on the show get a bit of backlash," Bannon added.

"I think people say 'Ah yeah the won't bother me' and then they read it. And you'll see 17,000 really nice tweets and you'll see one bad one, and the only one you'll remember is that one bad one."
