RTE responds to criticism over Olympics coverage as they hit out at 'misleading claims'

RTE had issued a statement in response to criticism over their coverage of the Tokyo Olympics.

The broadcaster was hit with criticism after Olympic fans in Northern Ireland were unable to watch Irish coverage.

There had been complaints about geo-blocking after viewers in Northern Ireland were unable to tune in to the broadcaster's coverage of the Toyko 2020 Games via their subscription to Sky.

A number of people took to Twitter to voice their frustration with the broadcaster for being unable to watch the coverage in the North.

It is understood users of other platforms had similar issues.

Among those who hit out at RTE was cross-border university campaigner Garbhan Downey who wrote on Twitter: "Why are Irish citizens in the north still forced to pay £160 per annum to the British broadcaster and remain blocked from watching the Irish Olympics coverage on RTE?"

RTE has since responded to the criticism saying that they only have the rights to show coverage in the Republic of Ireland.

A spokesperson said: "In response to a number of inaccurate and misleading claims regarding RTÉ coverage of Tokyo 2020, RTÉ wishes to clarify the following: RTÉ has rights to broadcast Olympic Games coverage in the Republic of Ireland only.

"The International Olympics Committee (IOC), who are the rights owners for Olympics Games coverage and make all decisions about how rights are allocated across the different territories, have included Northern Ireland as part of UK broadcast territory for Olympics coverage.

"As such, the rights holders for NI are BBC and Discovery (on Eurosport).

"RTÉ has no control over IOC decisions in this regard.”
