RTE reporter Fergal Bowers issues update on 'creepy' voice message as he calls it a 'serious matter'

RTE reporter Fergal Bowers has said that a recent voice message he received in the middle of the night is 'a very serious matter'.

The health journalist earlier said he would "alert the relevant authorities" after receiving the "creepy" late night voice message.

Bowers shared the unusual message to his Twitter followers on Saturday morning asking did anyone recognise the voice.

Mr Bowers said: "Does anyone recognise this voice? I got this message just after 3.30 am this morning via No Phone ID. I will be alerting the relevant authorities."

Adding: "It certainly sounds like someone who has a professionally-trained voice. I know the signs, given my job, as I was taught too."

The message, labelled "creepy" by some followers, begins with a female voice saying "It's 3:33 in the morning", they add "we are giving you a call, from the bones".

The message lasts no longer than 30 seconds.

Many followers empathised with the reporter and suggested he take the information to the gardai.

In an update to his followers on Sunday Bowers said: "The authorities are investigating the issue and it’s a very serious matter."

Many of his followers online threw support behind the journalist after he shared the latest updated.

One said: "I’m glad to hear that. No one should have to deal with that ever, let alone for just doing a job. Hope you and all the others affected by this are ok.

Another added: "Proper thing Fergal. It’s personally upsetting and also it is an attack on quality and effective journalism - as such, an attack on an important aspect of our democracy. Enormous respect for your balanced and objective reporting always, and especially this last 18 months.

A third said: "Cowardly behaviour on their part and unacceptable. Best wishes to you and hope they identitfy those behind it."
