RTE Reeling in the Years viewers all talking about one moment as iconic Taylor Swift song plays over controversial clip

Reeling in the Years returned to screens once again tonight as the second episode saw 2012 as the subject of the programme.

Among the events that featured in the episode Katie Taylor’s victorious win at the 2012 Olympics, the creation of Netflix and the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar, whose passing led to the passing of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013.

The deepening financial crash was also heavily featured as images of countless people lined up for social welfare filled our screens.

While there were plenty of sombre moments throughout the episode there was one song choice in particular that had viewers taking their opinions to Twitter.

As a number of events occurred in Northern Ireland, viewers couldn’t help but notice: “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift playing in the background.

This part of the show included a number of Union Jacks being removed from the Government buildings in Northern Ireland back in 2012, as well as the Queen of England visiting the six counties.

One tweeted: “we are never getting back together to unionists losing it over a flag is the funniest thing I've ever seen.”

Another said: “The Taylor Swift song on the Queen's visit to the north is classic.”

A third said: “Unionists losing the plot to the sounds of We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is beautifully appropriate.”

Someone else tweeted: “‘We’re Never Getting Back Together’ as the Mahon Tribunal rolls. Iconic.”

A number of people questioned was the song choice intentional.

One said: “Playing "We are never getting back together" over the Northern Irish section of #Reelingintheyears is almost too perfect.”

Another tweeted: “playing we are never getting back together while showing footage of Northern Irish protests is a new level of chaos.”

Someone else hailed the song choice: “I can’t get over these song choices and I need to meet the genius who did this.”

“‘’We are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ is an interesting song choice to play when talking about the flag situation in the North,” another said.
