RTE Reeling in the Years viewers all talking about one historic moment as emotional Repeal the Eighth referendum resurfaces

It was the year the Beast from the East brought blizzards and freezing temperatures across the country, Pope Francis came to Ireland on a two-day visit, and the Irish men's rugby union team won a Grand Slam.

2018 was the time when Mary Lou McDonald became Sinn Fein leader, Derry Girls came to our screens, and how can we forget the iconic 'flossing' dance?

But there was one moment that stood out and it's safe to say that we will always remember it.

Users took to Twitter to highlight the time Ireland voted to repeal the eighth amendment of its constitution, which since 1983 has effectively prohibited abortion in all bar exceptional circumstances.

66.4 percent of people who voted chose to vote yes and 33.6 percent voted no.

It was also a record turnout with 64.51 percent of people voting.

One user tweeted: "Reeling in the Years reminds us how the last decade hasn’t been easy, but we have had two referenda that wouldn’t have passed 2 decades previously. We can shape the country’s future."

Another said: "Cried through the whole repeal section, how did we manage to get through that time."

A third added: "Seeing people come home to vote to repeal is so inspiring."

Someone else tweeted: "If it wasn't for Marriage Equality and Repeal (and the GAA I guess), the last decade was bleak for Ireland."

Other users tweeted how proud they are of our nation, but how we've still a lot to achieve. They said:

"Every time I watch Reeling in the Years I'm left angry and upset as each episode proves time and time again how many women in Ireland were and continue to be let down by the state."

"There's Repeal on Reeling in the Years. Totes emosh."

"I'm absolutely wailing, I think I spent most of 2018 in tears to be honest."

"Getting PTSD looking at those no posters. Also getting PSTD remembering how much I fancied Simon Harris around the referendum. My brain was truly broken."

"Still not able for home to vote images."
