RTE radio boss Tom McGuire says 'revolving door of talent' waiting to take over from Sean O'Rourke

RTE radio boss Tom McGuire claims he has a revolving door of talent waiting in the wings ready to take over when Sean O’Rourke eventually retires.

The head of RTE Radio 1 clarified that while there are no cement plans for the popular presenter to hang up his mic just yet, he’s confident the show will go on - just as it did when Pat Kenny left the prime time slot.

He told the Irish Daily Mirror: “Sean is on contract well into next year and we haven’t come as far as looking at that at all, and he is performing really well where it is there.

“And we will always, because you know, back seven years ago now, when Pat [Kenny] went off to Newstalk, you have to have options.

“We are really blessed here that we have so many current affair broadcasters and they are working for this organisation.

“I have a revolving door of people knocking on this door looking for gigs all the time, both from inside and outside this organisation.”

As an RTE staff member, The Today Show host will be obliged to step down once he turns 65 next year.

And confident that they will have a worthy suitor to take over his ratings winning show, McGuire said:

“Yes, the thing about it is, I suppose there are two things here.

“In any programme you have the presenter but you also need to remember, the programme team are the ethos and what people expect from Radio One.

“When Pat Kenny walked away from Radio One, the world didn’t collapse and that programme has grown with Sean.

“And when Sean’s time comes to move to do something else, it’ll grow and prosper with the next presenter as well but I don’t know when that is going to be happening yet.”
