RTE Prime Time viewers voice their frustration as they blast 'out of touch' Housing Minister's interview

RTE's Prime Time returned once again this week and the current affairs programme once again and housing was again the central topic of the show.

The housing crisis has once again cropped up as one of the biggest challenges for the Government with thousands of people across the country suffering from the effects of the issue.

And with the Covid-19 pandemic likely to become less pressing with the success of the vaccine rollout, people are back focusing on the issues that plagued this country before the pandemic.

On tonight's episode a report detailed a number of young people across the country that feel frozen out of the market due to high prices here.

Others told of how they are facing making difficult decisions about where to live as a result of the crisis while one older woman explained that she has two children aged in their 30s still living at home trying to save for a house.

Appearing on the show was Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien who faced intense questioning as to what solutions the government will have to the issue.

Speaking during the programme Minister O'Brien said that he was against the bulk sale of family homes to vulture funds and pledged that he would be working on new legislation to tackle the issue with Finance Minister Pascal Donohoe.

However less than impressed viewers took to Twitter to express their frustration with the current government's approach to the crisis.

One wrote: "There would be nothing wrong with renting long term if the Government decided to protect renters. Other countries can do it. But it's not Ireland, which is almost completely designed around home ownership.

Another said: "€400,000 is not affordable housing minister, to people on the average wage, you are forcing people to rent for life and it benefits landlords, developers and vulture funds only.

Others lambasted the Minister for saying we are four years away from the next general election- with many viewers believing the government will collapse before then.

One wrote: "4 years from an election? Wouldn't bet on that

Another said: "4 years away from a GE! Are you serious? Goes to show how out of touch you are.

And another added: "Election in 4 years ?? I'm heading for Paddy Power."
