Last night, viewers of RTE's Prime Time praised one young man for the "quote of the pandemic" as he expressed his opinion on the Government's plan for an outdoor summer.
Speaking during a voxpop, he said: “If you have a nice garden like a big, huge garden so like chill in your garden, but what if you’re a normal c*** who doesn’t have a garden?”
It comes after the crowds on Dublin’s South William Street last weekend sparked criticism from the Government and Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan.
Dr Holohan was branded "judgemental" and "out of line" for his tweet about the scenes.
He tweeted: “Drove into Dublin City Centre to collect someone from work at 815 PM. Absolutely shocked at scenes in South Great George’s St, Exchequer St, South William St area.
“Enormous crowds – like a major open-air party. This is what we do not need when we have made so much progress.”
People were also outraged by Colin O'Reilly, the Director of City Recovery, with Dublin City Council's comments on supplying more rubbish bins to illuminate the litter problem.
Speaking on Today with Claire Byrne on RTE earlier this week, Mr O'Reilly said: “We have toilets and bins on one point, and we've public health guidelines on another. We feel that if we provide toilets and bins at these locations, it'll drive more footfall and create more public health issues at these locations.”
On Prime Time, Una Mullaly, a journalist with The Irish Times, highlighted how the City Councils tactics to solving the public gathering problem are not working.
She said: "Closing down public spaces because it's being used is idiotic, and not pedestrianising enough streets so that people can social distance is idiotic."
The Government has promoted an outdoor summer all year, but many have raised the question of whether it can happen safely in urbanised areas.
Ms Mullaly said: “There’s a bit of a gap between, maybe, the people who are making policy, or instructing people to socialise outdoors, who may be conceiving of, you know, back gardens and things like that.
“You know a lot of people who live in the city they don’t have big back gardens.”
She added: “There have to be facilities and amenities to do that. Basic things public seating and toilets. People are not asking for something extraordinary here.”
People took to Twitter to praise the man for the quote of the pandemic that perfectly summed up what the Government were missing in their outdoor summer plans.
One user said: "'What if you're a normal c*** that doesn't have a garden?' Quote of the pandemic there."
Another user said: “This is the quote of the pandemic.”
