RTE Prime Time viewers joke about how to speed up the booster vaccine rollout

RTE's Prime Time viewers joked about how to speed up the booster vaccine rollout with some saying they have had so many jabs they could do it themselves.

Tuesday night's programme discussed the ways in which the administration of booster shots might be accelerated across the country as fears mount of a surge in the Omicron variant.

One of the suggestions on how to ramp up the jab campaign included getting rid of the 15-minute post-vaccine waiting period.

This is the amount of time people are required to wait in the surgery or clinic after getting their vaccine in case they have an anaphylactic reaction or a severe allergic reaction.

According to Prime Time, pharmacies and GPs said ditching that waiting window could help them double their capacity in their surgeries and clinics where they have limited space.

Eileen Flynn, the HSE clinical principal lead for the vaccination programme in North Dublin, told Prime Time that the risk was "minimal" to get rid of the post-vaccine waiting period for people getting booster doses.

But she said it would depend on the group getting vaccinated, saying that there were more “fainters” in the younger age groups.

"There tends to be a high percentage of fainters in the teenage group. That would be something we are very mindful of," she said.

"Each person has a personal journey. If they feel well after ten minutes sometimes they vote with their feet and go anyway."

However, covid-fatigued viewers made light-hearted suggestions about how they could contribute to the booster rollout, and joked that getting vaccinated is now so commonplace that they could give themselves the booster dose.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Some people have been vaccinated that often they could just start administering it themselves. #rtept”

Another added: “Having had three vaccinations I could do them myself. #rtept”
