RTE Prime Time viewers fume as new housing estate lies empty due to issues with water

A special focus from RTE Prime Time on Tuesday night on the housing crisis had people less than impressed online - after it revealed a number of estates were vacant thanks to water issues.

The main example came in the capital, with reporter Fran McNulty leading the piece.

Castle View is a recently-built estate with 100 units in Lucan.

But it remains empty at time of writing.

Respond, the housing charity that manages the estate, told Prime Time on Tuesday night that there was a three-and-a-half-month delay connecting the homes to the mains water supply, and a five-and-a-half-month delay connecting them to the main sewer.

One woman told the programme that she was forced to couch-surf as a result of the chaos.

And people on social media were fuming at the whole debacle.

One tweeted: "New houses sitting idle due to no water."

A second added: "Shutdown the #IrishWater Quango and give the work back to the councils. As the public want."

While a third said: "566 built estates & tenanted across the country & are not yet connected to sewerage. Did I hear correctly? That’s unreal"

What followed was a spiky debate between Sinn Fein spokesperson for housing Eoin Ó Broin and Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise Damien English.

But the majority of responders were yet again impressed with how host Sarah McEnerney dealt with the debate.

One user said: "Good woman Sarah, keep asking relevant questions & honing back in on the side stepped questions

A second tweeted "Sarah is surgical and restores my trust in journalism with every word that comes out of her mouth.

"'I'll ask the questions here.' Good woman Sarah." noted a third.
