RTE Prime Time viewers all saying the same thing about 'powerful' guest on Ashling Murphy murder

A broadcaster has been praised for her "powerful" message after Ashling Murphy's brutal murder earlier this week.

Dearbhail McDonald appeared on RTE's Prime Time on Thursday night to discuss the crime that has left the entire country reeling.

The journalist told host Miriam O'Callaghan: "We're angry, we're scared and we are weary, we are absolutely exhausted. When events such as these happen, and it's no consolation to the family and friends and everyone who knew and loved Ashling, that these random attacks that are stranger danger attacks are in the rarer category but as we heard, they aren't so rare.

"We have, long before Covid came, been in a shadow pandemic of gender based violence in Ireland.

"We know in particular that women under the age of 35 are at risk and we also know that it is partner violence makes up a lot of that.

"We have to look at the attitudes, beliefs and cultures that gives permission to this.

"We can't just be surprised when events happen like this that they are somehow unknowable or unpredictable when in fact you look at those attitudes, those cultures and those beliefs."

Asked about the "it's not all men" argument, Dearbhail said "It's enough men".

The journalist was showered with praise for capturing the mood of the nation by social media users.

One said: "Absolutely excellent on #rtept tonight - totally connecting with how so many people feel today, outraged and heartbroken."

Another said: "Derbhail being amazing on #rtept . No mention of apps etc from Josepha tonight!"

While Bernadette Phillips tweeted: "We are calling out for decades about issues of domestic violence and violence against women. But nothing has changed. We can have all the reports you like but we need real measures. We need men working with us on this to call out for these changes."
