RTE Prime Time viewers all saying the same thing about controversial Lidl Covid-19 tests

RTE Prime Time viewers debated the effectiveness of DIY antigen tests on social media as tonight's episode saw the public testing out the new kits.

A mobile testing unit was set up in Bray where members of the public tried their own hand out at the Lidl antigen kits.

Reporter Conor McMorrow found many were happy that the retailer is selling the tests, with one punter saying the majority will be "sensible" and use them correctly.

It comes after Professor Philip Nolan, chair of the Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, criticised Lidl's recent decision to sell the tests in their stores and said that "these antigen tests will not keep you safe."

Prof Nolan tweeted: “Can I get some snake oil with that?

“It makes for a great salad dressing with a pinch of salt and something acerbic.”

He encouraged people to continue to wear masks and social distance and added: “These antigen tests will not keep you safe.”

And last night experts with differing views on the tests, including Harvard epidemiologist Michael Mina and GP Ray Walley, joined Prime Time host Sarah McInerney in studio to debate the products.'

The discussion provoked a big reaction on social media, with many viewers defending the retailer for selling the kits.

One wrote: "In all seriousness, all of Europe are using these antigen tests. They are provided free by employers in the UK & Germany. They are not a substitute for a vaccine but they are helpful as we wait for our countries to be fully vaccinated."

While another added: "I think that means we're too stupid to use tests that are used across Europe. People taking responsibility for themselves is what will get things back to normal. This proscriptive stuff is wearing thin."

Here is the best of the social media reaction:
