RTE presenter Miriam O'Callaghan says she never celebrated birthday before turning 60

RTE's Miriam O'Callaghan says she never celebrated her birthday before she turned 60.

The presenter revealed that she never saw the appeal of a big party until she made plans for her milestone birthday on January 6, RSVP Live reports.

Miriam explained: "I didn't have a 16th, 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th or 50th birthday party, so I won't be having one when I turn 60."

However, the Prime Time presenter did reveal she took a trip to Rome to celebrate in style this weekend.

She told the Sunday Independent's Life magazine: "I have never had a birthday party in my life - I just never liked the idea. But I wanted to do something special this time, so we all decided to go to Rome for the weekend - the Eternal City.

"We are all here, my husband Steve and my eight children."

Miriam revealed she never worries about growing older since her sister Anne died from cancer in her 30s.

She explained: "As most people know, my sister died when she was 33 and I can't understand why people look at ageing and think it is sad to be getting older.

"I thank God for every day I am here on this planet."

The presenter also paid tribute to her late RTE colleague Marian Finucane following her shock death last year.

She described Marian as a "trailblazer" and the most "wonderful broadcaster".

Miriam added: "Her interview with Nuala O'Faolain was the best I have ever heard.

"She was a brilliant journalist, but was not interested in the celebrity side, she shied away from it."
