RTE mystery as viewers puzzled about last-minute cancelling of highly popular programme

RTE viewers were left puzzled last night after the last-minute cancelling of one of its most popular shows.

Fans were preparing themselves to nestle down for the final night of First Dates Ireland only to find that RTE had axed the finale and opted for a re-run instead from pre-covid.

Some viewers were left baffled and took to Twitter to express their concerns about the daters from last night's repeat and how close they were despite current guidelines.

One said: "Was this episode taped pre-COVID and, if so, it makes the contestants look really bad for all just ignoring social distancing after they spent the whole series making a big deal about it."

A second added: "Only after realising it's a repeat cos they're not wearing masks."

Speaking about the matter, RTE said that the cancelling was down to operational difficulties which led to the show being scrapped for this week.

They added: "It will be rescheduled for a later date. Apologies for any inconvenience."

And for anyone wondering, they confirmed: "Thursday’s episode will be a repeat."

On RTE 1, Tanáiste Leo Varadkar appeared on RTE's Prime Time after the Government announced the latest round of reopening for the country.

Mr Varadkar said the country could get a “little mini boom” as hundreds of thousands of people will get back to work next month in a press conference after the Taoiseach's speech.

He added a "rebound in consumer spending” is expected from the middle of May “perhaps even a little mini boom" given the scale of "pent up demand and the amount of savings that have been accrued."

Varadkar continued: "That will fall off and we’re cognisant of that and we want to make sure that we don’t withdraw the financial supports from businesses and from people at the same time that same time the spending bounce begins to dissipate."
