RTE Liveline listeners stunned as boy left waiting for ambulance for over two hours with broken leg

A teenager who broke his leg was left on the ground for over two hours while waiting on an ambulance, Liveline listeners were told on Tuesday.

The teen's mother, Margaret, appeared on the popular radio show on Tuesday afternoon to explain to host Joe Duffy about the awful situation.

She was told her son was 48th in the queue for an ambulance when she called for urgent assistance.

She explained that she had to call a taxi to get her son to Temple Street Children's Hospital due to the severity of his injury.

Margaret had to ask a family friend to help him into the car.

She told Joe: "I asked the ambulance service last night, is there anything else I can do? I was nearly crying on the phone. I jumped out of the taxi and ran in. He ran and got a wheelchair.

"When we got in, they took him off me straight away, did the x-rays and all. He's on morphine today.

"I'm just so worried for other people. We're in a pandemic and there's twelve ambulances in Dublin. It's scary to think."

And Margaret wasn't the only distressed mother in the A&E that couldn't get an ambulance sent out to her.

"Another lady in there had to bring her child in choking because she couldn't get an ambulance," she added.

Listeners were disgusted by the situation.

One tweeted: "Shocking waiting for an ambulance that long"

While another told of a similar situation she had found herself in: "I helped a man on the side of the road that was having a heart attack ambulance took 90 minutes- reason given there was a crash in the port tunnel- I gave him an aspirin to chew & thankfully the Mater saved his life"

A third said: "A friend of mine, wife had a heart attack and had to wait for an hour for an ambulance."
