RTE Liveline listeners left cringing after 'tribute' show to Kellie Harrington led by host Joe Duffy

The country is still buzzing after Kellie Harrington finished off Ireland's Olympics with a gold medal on Sunday morning.

Having watched her countrymen and woman claim medals of their own in the rowing and boxing before her, Harrington did the business to bring home Ireland's 12th-ever Olympic title.

Naturally, tributes rolled in immediately from the likes of Michael D Higgins and the Taoiseach.

RTE had another great tribute planned though in the form of Liveline on Monday afternoon.

They launched "Gold in Their Eyes: Songs for Kellie Harrington" - inviting listeners to call in with their hand written poems and songs about the Portland Row native.

And we got the results on Monday's show.

Some were excellent, some were, er, far from excellent and some perhaps shouldn't have been written at all.

Listeners were left to take to social media in shame at the "cringefest" that was unfolding.

One said: "This is so terrible i cant turn it off, its my penance for drinking too much wine last night."

Another added: "Liveline message to the rest of the athletes, ‘thanks for your service now F off, we got a bandwagon to catch’!"

A third said: "This is a roadkill sandwich, served with a side of sauteed vomit."

Others pointed out that the first show after the rowers won gold a week ago was surrounded in controversy as Michelle Smith emailed in.

One tweeter said: "Bandwagon special. The radio equivalent of Shane Ross hanging around airports and TV cameras. I don't think I can bear 75 minutes of cringe worthy guff from people who never even heard of Kellie Harrington until last week. I'm out."
